How do I create my own website? Follow these five steps

If you’ve ever asked yourself this question “how do I create my own website” you’ve probably thought about the technicalities involved in the process, right? This might have initially scared you a little and you might have decided to put things on hold for a while. But discouraging notions aside, the feeling of seeing a webpage you spent your efforts on is truly a wonderful feeling.

Believe me, a degree in computer science is not necessary —all you need is a computer, creative juices, and probably a cup of coffee to keep you alert while you’re on the job.

Step 1 – idea brainstorming

This is where you project your possible audience, content, type of website and etc. Think of it as looking for concepts for a scrapbook. Are you going to post personal, play-by-play accounts of your life? Do you want a website to sell your products or services? Are you going to put paid ads? Should you use a pink background or a white one? These details will be crucial for later so keep note.

Step 2 is to get yourself a domain name

The domain name is sort of your site’s identity. It is what leads audiences to your site. An example of a domain name is “babysitting.com”. Often a domain name is referred to as URL or Uniform Resource Locator and is the one people type on their address site to view a site. Make sure you chose one that is unique and easy to remember so as not to confuse people.  You can easily get a domain name from an online registrar.

Step 3 – Choose a webhost or a website building platform

Using the services of a Web host is a secure way to rent online space for your website.  Web hosts are incredibly cheap with prices starting as low as $6 per month for an unlimited number of websites.

Step 4 Design your website

Now that we’re done conceptualizing and building a foundation for the website, we can finally actualize the design. The look of the blog is structured by using programming language. Does this sound scary? Probably yes. But think again. There are a lot of languages to use from, and they don’t involve a lot of tongue twisters.

Hypertext Mark-up Language, or HTML, is the most popular in the bunch. You can learn it by yourself by reading from books or online sources. XHTML is a more complex version of HTML. CSS, or Cascading Style Sheet, allows you more flexibility when it comes to styling. Javascript allows you to add animation or other interactive material on your website.

Step 5 – Give yourself a break and use WordPress

In 2011 it is no longer a necessity to learn any HTML coding at all.  If you are a complete beginner and you’re not ready to spend huge amounts of money on a website you’re not sure about, it’d be best to start with site like WordPress.com. It’s a blog platform, but let’s you build your own website nonetheless.  It is incredibly easy to use and works like a wordprocessor.

By using WordPress you will also get access to readymade templates, that you can then edit which will enable you to customize your website to your exact requirement.

OK, I have now done my job and removed the fear factor.  By now you should be raring to start creating your first website.  Grab my free step-by-step guide which I have created especially for you at http://www. createmyownwebpage.net

Create a Forum Website by Frontpage

A forum is not a couple of html codes which can be created by dreamweaver, frontpage or any other website building software.

If you want to get a forum online at your own domain you will need a web host providing one of the forum softwares; vBulletin, phpBB or SMF. Some of the web hosts offer an installing service called “Fantastico”. By using this service, you can create your forum without difficulty, even if you are not skilled in using any software.

Watch this short video tutorial to learn how to create a forum website:

To set up a forum website, there are six steps you will need to take:

Step 1: Register a domain name. A domain name is a name you want to call your website. For example, yahoo.com, articlesbase.com, threehosts.com or wikipedia.org.

Step 2: Buy a web hosting package providing phpBB, vBulletin or SMF to host your website online. A web hosting service provides you with online space and needed softwares. This enables you to get your forum online at your registered domain name. We recommend getting your domain and web hosting plan from the same company. This way, it is often possible to get your domain for free, due to some web hosting services offering a domain as a free gift today.

Step3: Install your favorite forum software. To do this automatically, install the forum software using Fantastico. Currently most web hosts have phpBB, vBulletin and SMF forum softwares available in their Fantastico. To install, you must first log into your web hosting account. Then choose the blue smiley face (called Fantastico) viewable on cpanel. Click on the desired forum software; they all look nearly the same. While phpBB is great for a new forum and has some great features, vBulletin is easier to use and maintain and is nicer to use. Select the domain name you would like to install the board to. The “Install in directory” box can be left empty in case you want to have your forum as the starting page for your website (http://www.yourdomain.com). You can specify a directory, e.g forum, in case you want to have your forum installed at http://www.yourdomain.com/forum.

Step4: Select the username and the password for the forum administrator.

Step5: Fill in the Site Name and the Short Description fields which will be appeared in the header of each page of your forum. Proceed by clicking Finish installation. You will be taken to a page with the administrative panel of the board.

Step6: Now, you can easily define the categories/sub-categories of the forum and manage them as the administrator.
